2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Lead to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Follows Lukewarm Response
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this decision through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a clearer direction.
The president expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.
Trend of Key Recruitment
This announcement echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire message from Ismailer's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just completed your meeting - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”
With your dedication and versatility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last fall’s the game testing phase was enlightening. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a clearer brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our fans.
The trust in this project increases every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of 31st Union. Following a period of discussions, he starts with us on the specified date.
Ben’s management and background in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having spent the recent years developing and leading some of the most popular series in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in welcoming Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to persist witnessing the development of the game in the months to come.
David

Game Details and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a public demo. At the time, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an thrilling step forward on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Challenge the rivals with fresh skills, risks, and challenges that shift every match. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Or go big, put it on the line, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The choice is up to you."
The game has not yet received an official launch window or consoles, but players can look forward to further news as production continues.
