The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” said a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, labor groups filed for a court injunction to prevent the government from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a government shutdown limits the authority of the administration to carry out firings, citing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but excluding the start of October, since funding lapsed at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s impact on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
