Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
