An Tale of Surprising Generosity: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Ground

Back in the year 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to book accommodation upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a major event was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could bed down in the airport – but soon learned Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open around the clock. Not knowing what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I caught a bus into town and began walking towards a gaming venue, believing I could pass the evening in an establishment that was open through the night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the next morning, however, being a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

We could all use more people who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared out of place because a female student noticed me loitering in the city center and asked if I was OK. I shared my situation and without hesitation she offered I could crash on the ground of her dormitory at the Australian National University – which was perfect, as that’s where the important interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided some food: a leftover sandwiches she had from her work shift. This gave me a hot shower and a protected spot and secure to spend the night.

Looking back, it’s clear to me the significant risk she undertook being a woman allowing a guy who was a complete stranger crash at her place. Back then I operated under my male privilege bubble and did not consider to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, it astounds me she did that – yet incredibly thankful.

I never did go to ANU, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish the universe has repaid her generosity tenfold. The world needs more folks like that woman.
