Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Charity
Passing on undesired offerings could be viewed as somewhat rude β unless it's done the right way.
A Philanthropic Auction
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. The diverse haul could include objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
The collection, combined, are valued at around β¬800,000. The plan is to sold in a public auction by a Italian art dealer. A date remains to be announced, although the goal is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the proceeds going to various charities.
Storage Room Collection
The items are said to be locked away in a secure area on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away indefinitely.
A complete inventory has not yet been disclosed, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was presented in parliament. The query raised whether a legal value limit was being followed. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents valued above β¬300.
An International Assortment of Gifts
Among the items:
- A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
- A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
- Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.
Political Context
The prime minister has received praise, particularly from her allies, with building relationships with foreign leaders and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.
The forthcoming sale symbolizes a novel approach to handle the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a political career.
