Disaster Occurs as Unintentional Blast at Police Station in Indian-administered Kashmir Results in Nine Fatalities
A catastrophic blast at a police station in Indian-administered Kashmir has resulted in the fatalities of nine people and wounding to thirty-two others, according to police declarations.
The occurrence took place when a stockpile of seized explosive materials inadvertently exploded during processing activities.
Chronology of Events
The explosion happened on Friday night at the Nowgam security post, where explosive materials taken from the Faridabad area in the northern territory of Haryana province were being held provisionally.
Area police chief stated that the explosives were pending forensic examination when a "extremely tragic" mishap during handling led to their blast at approximately 23:20 in the evening.
Authority Declarations
Law enforcement officials confirmed that this was an "inadvertent blast" and rather than a terrorist attack. "Different conjectures regarding the reason of this incident is unwarranted," highlighted the police chief during a journalist meeting.
The security post suffered significant harm from the blast, with nearby constructions also being influenced by the powerful blast.
Consequences and Fatalities
Multiple vehicles were "consumed by fire and turned into burned shells, with debris scattered across the site," according to police accounts.
"The force of the explosion was such that some physical fragments were found in close-by residences, approximately 100-200 metres away the security post," reported an official source.
Most of the fatalities were law enforcement personnel, along with technical investigation team, two evidence documentation specialists, and a garment worker who was with the team.
Authority Response
The region's Administrative Head stated commiserations and announced that an investigation had been directed into the devastating event.
"I have commissioned a probe to establish the cause of the unintentional blast. Profoundly distressed by the fatalities of important persons due to profoundly sorrowful accidental blast at Nowgam security post in Srinagar. My sympathies to the bereaved families. I pray for quick healing of the harmed," stated the leader on online channels.
