European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
