Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Remarks

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this week, reacting to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the league found that the Saints had incentivized team members for making hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Recent Exchange

Wilson's response came after Payton made comments after Denver's historic 33-32 victory over the Giants. Payton remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • The quarterback was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million contract.
  • The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before Denver hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the player from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious split between the player and his coach.
