The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 lives perished and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
