The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.
A freshly coined acronym surfaced a couple of months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, as stated by doctors including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is unusual for medical staff to attend to a child who has seen the death of their whole family. However, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are continuing. The Israeli government rejects these claims, just as it disavows all charges it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, although at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, it seems, is what international harmony manifests as.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems entirely distinct.
A Double Standard
Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Profound Human Cost
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. An institution that initially championed harmony has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
