What's Inside that Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
For much of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories built from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for an escape route in episode 6 forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that could contain the key to defeating him for good.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.
There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.
Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the events in the tunnel is detailed in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a warship into a dimension known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
Unlocking the Mystery
Considering what is revealed about his research, the case almost certainly contained some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would genetically impart to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.
Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he struggles with the influence of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will Byers was controlled by the shadow monster in the past.
Confronting Terror
The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a showdown between him and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.
This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
